WaterBridge: Selling Puts Where the Pipelines Meet the Premium
Midstream infrastructure isn't sexy. It's ditches, pipes, and water disposal wells — the plumbing of the oil patch. But WaterBridge Infrastructure (WBI) has been quietly building a toll-road business across the Permian Basin, and the stock has reflected it: up significantly from a 200-day MA of $26.34 to current levels around $33.55. Barron's is watching. So are we — from $3.55 below the current price.
The Trade
We're selling the $30 put expiring September 18 for $0.89 in premium. That's 43 days out, a delta of -0.231, and an annualized yield north of 22% on the cash secured. The $30 strike sits comfortably below both the 50-day MA ($32.16) and current price, and nearly $3.75 above the 200-day. If WBI pulls back hard and we get assigned, we're buying a midstream infrastructure company at levels it hasn't traded at since early spring.
What's Driving This
WBI just dropped Q2 2026 results, which is the catalyst that brought IV up to 52.6% — rich enough to make this trade interesting. The fundamentals are a mixed bag: P/E of 479 screams "growth story still in early innings," profit margins are barely above zero at -0.4%, and the dividend yield is a rounding error at 0.15%. None of that is surprising for a capital-intensive infrastructure buildout. Analyst targets sit at $35, which implies modest upside from here, but the real thesis isn't price appreciation — it's that WBI's asset base in produced water management is structurally necessary as long as Permian operators keep drilling.
Why the Setup Works
The technical picture is constructive. WBI has been in a controlled uptrend — the 50-day crossed above the 200-day months ago and the spread between them is widening. A move back to $30 would require a roughly 10.6% drawdown from current levels, which would also represent a backtest of prior resistance-turned-support. The IV at 52.6% is elevated relative to what this kind of midstream name typically trades at, which means the market is pricing in more uncertainty than the fundamental backdrop warrants. That's our edge: we're collecting premium inflated by post-earnings jitters on a name with real, hard infrastructure assets underneath it.
What to Watch
Keep an eye on Permian Basin rig counts and any updated production guidance from major WBI customers — volume throughput is what drives this business. A broader energy selloff on macro concerns (slowing demand, crude weakness) is the primary risk to the trade. If WBI holds above $30 through September 18, we collect the $0.89 and move on. If it doesn't, we own produced water infrastructure at a price that looked cheap six months ago.
