T-Mobile's Signal Is Clear: Sell the Noise, Collect the Premium
SpaceX has telecom investors spooked. After Starlink's earnings rattled the sector last week, TMUS shares are sitting at $177 — about $5 below the 50-day moving average and nearly $21 off the 200-day. That's the kind of short-term dislocation that creates opportunity for put sellers who actually look at the fundamentals.
The Trade
We're selling the TMUS $160 put expiring September 18 for $4.69 in premium — 39 days out, delta -0.24. That's a breakeven of $155.31, which requires the stock to drop another 12.3% from here before we're underwater. On a stock with a beta of 0.33. T-Mobile would need to shed roughly $22 billion in market cap in five weeks for this trade to turn into an assignment problem.
Why TMUS, Why Now
The SpaceX satellite anxiety is real but overblown for T-Mobile specifically. Starlink competes at the margins — rural broadband, RV users — not in the dense suburban and urban markets where TMUS generates the bulk of its revenue. T-Mobile has spent years building the best mid-band 5G network in the country, and that infrastructure moat doesn't evaporate because Elon Musk had a good quarter. The Friday Night 5G Lights promotion — now with $8 million in prizes — signals a company comfortable enough with its market position to run splashy consumer engagement campaigns rather than quietly panic.
The valuation case is straightforward. At 18.5x earnings, TMUS is cheap relative to its growth profile, and Zacks flagging it as a top-ranked value stock this week isn't noise. The analyst consensus target sits at $243 — 37% above current price. Profit margins at 11.5% in a capital-intensive telecom business are respectable, and the 2.27% dividend yield provides a floor of institutional buying interest that keeps sharp drawdowns in check.
The Numbers That Matter
IV at 52.4% against a 30-day historical vol gives us elevated premium in a stock that historically doesn't move much. Beta of 0.33 is about as low as you'll find in anything that's not a utility, which means the implied vol is pricing in fear that the realized vol almost certainly won't deliver. We're on the right side of that trade. The $4.69 premium on a $160 strike represents 2.9% collected against the strike, or roughly 27% annualized. For a stock this stable, that's a generous return.
What to Watch
The key variable here is whether the Starlink narrative gains traction with institutional sellers or fades as a one-week storyline. Watch T-Mobile's next subscriber data or any guidance updates — if churn stays low and net adds hold, the sector fear dissipates quickly. The $170 level is near-term technical support to monitor; a clean hold there keeps this trade in comfortable territory through expiration.
